Thank you for that suggestion.  I think you are correct in that it has 
something to do with a
kernel bug.  I had compiled a 2.6.38 vanilla kernel and when I boot up
with that it works perfectly, so there is a bug in the 2.6.32 kernel.

The bug report that you listed has been closed due to this reason:

"This bug report now covers at least 3 different failure cases, of
whichsome are fixed and some are not. It is completely impossible to
make progress with such a bug report, so I'm closing it.

If anyone is still having trouble reading CDs or DVDs in the current
kernel version in stable (2.6.32-35) or unstable (3.0.0-1), please open
a *new* bug report."

I will look to see if there was another report that matches this bug, and file 
one if
there isn't.
