That works as well for US pints and pounds. It's not a good way to define a unit, though. For science and engineering I prefer SI units but for everyday use I don't see what the fuss is about: the conversions are trivial. In any case I certainly don't approve of using threats of violence (i.e., laws) to force people to use any particular system.
