There isn't much point in using rsync since you're neither copying to a remote host, nor can you save time by copying only modified files because it's the first and probably only copy. Depending on what you're planning to do with the backup, tar would be a good choice, and "cp -ax" works very well, too; just watch out for "lost+find" directories when using cp.
