Since usbmem is another file system the -x flag should prevent this.
Also as another poster has said you need the -a and -H flags to maintain
file ownership and copy hardlinks
rsync -axH / /usbmem/
Note: I am careful about trailing "/"s. In you case I don't think there
is a problem but I like be clear about it.
