If you're doing a legitimate backup and have cdrtools installed,
use the program, readcd.  The command is something like:

readcd dev=0,0,0 f=cdimage.iso

dev= is cdrtools way of referring to your cd burner in an OS
agnostic manner.  You can get its value by invoking:

cdrecord -scanbus
