I've been also using encrypted partitions (all except boot) for the last 2,5
years or so on a single core system and dual core system with respectively
1GHz and 2GHz CPU and 1GB vs 2GB and didn't notice any major issue with
them. On my 500MHz old machine there is a slow down (cpu load) when using
encryption, but unless I don't have multiple IO's it still manages all of
it, so loss is really very low
