Besides the online maps, GPS, etc, there's ax25, so if you get a
ham license, you can network your "home" computer to the laptop
and read email while sailing.  Of course, you'd need a ham radio
and antenna on the boat, but, hey, they don't say this for no
reason:
   A boat is a hole in the water into which one pours money.
