I compiled all the acpi related stuff into the kernel (to get suspend to restart properly, but I also checked when compiled as modules). As for the symptoms, I sometimes only get to the Power down message and sometimes get the blank screen. BTW, from looking into the kernel source, halt is acpi related as acpi attaches a callback for performing the actual power off.
