This one rings a bell. Try running: host NAME_OF_THE_SERVER IIRC this is a problem with the name resolution. I think you send it as IPv^ (AAAA?), you get back a reply that there isn't, but a buggy caching DNS server on your router considers that answer as 1.0.0.0 . Further 'getent hosts NAME_OF_THE_SERVER' will return 1.0.0.0, until you get the proper answer cached in, as the above. BTW: most of the above is speculation.
