Apparently that was the case.  I now have my connection back, after playing
with the router's settings and turning it on and off a few times.  I don't
understand just what the problem was, so it may recur.

It's interesting that there was a point where I had a connection if I booted
from the XP partition or booted the Etch netinst CD in rescue mode, but had
no connection if I booted Etch from the hard drive.  I was wondering if it
had to do with which IP (192.168.0.??) was assigned but got no conclusive
evidence of that.

Anyway, thanks to all of you for the many suggestions.
