I have been having some troubles with my DSL internet connection for a
while now. First an upgrade appeared to remove some or all of the
dhcp related software on my box. Thanks to this list I think I fixed
that by installing dhcp3-client. But, then the connection would only
be there about half of the time I booted. Thanks again to this list I
can now work around that, though I still don't know how to fix it
entirely.
I am not sure if I see the picture: are you trying to connect to your
ADSL modem through a router or directly from your Debian computer?
When you expect a connection to have been established, what is the
output of these commands:
$> route -n
$> ifconfig -a
$> cat /etc/resolv.conf
What do you get in your /var/log/syslog? Also, are you running a
firewall? If you have a router, what model is it?
I am connecting to an ADSL modem directly from a computer running Debian
Etch. It has been working flawlessly for the last few years. That
comptuer works as a router for my home lan. I have also used a consumer
grade router and all things worked there as well. I think you have some
little problem somewhere which is preventing smooth operation of your
internet connection. With the above information, we can narrow down the
problem.
