My OP wasn't clear; I HAD tried 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' about a dozen times (purging and reinstalling, as the OP mentioned, was simply a more drastic step). The problem, as I mentioned, is that the config scripts don't *ask* any questions about monitor resolution or mouse device.
