Two wild guesses:

  (a) Gnome is using sudo.  In this case, it is your own password that
  should be typed, and you should need the proper entries in
  /etc/sudo.conf.

  (b) There is a character encoding mismatch.  This is a pain in the
  ... for all non-English setups in many situations.
