The instruction from Aby happen to be totally incorrect for Debian. Debian does not use runlevels to control the GUI/window stuff. In Debian, GUI is started in a couple of ways:
1) when you want, without rebooting by typing the startx command. 2) by installing and configuring a 'display manager'. Available display managers are gdm, kdm, xdm, and one other, I think. Also, you can install a display manager and get it running *without* rebooting.
