This is how I get a "desktop system"

Install Debian, set up everything including a new kernel.

Then:

apt-get install x-window-system x-window-system-core fluxbox
xf86config
cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4-old
cp /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
startx

regards,
T.
