If you want to just tranform them a little bit, for example to scale, crop, rotate, adjust levels, correct gamma, or change formats, it is *much* better to use ImageMagick's command line tool 'convert'. Convert is way faster for the simple things and also easier to script than the Gimp (for batch work).
