That's bad! Why this? Have no such problem with kernel 2.4.8.
Do you have anabled the following?
---> ATA/IDE/MFM/RLL support
---> IDE, ATA and ATAPI Block devices
- Generic PCI IDE chipset support
- Generic PCI bus master DMA support
- Use DMA by default when available
- ALI 15x3 chipset support
