Hey people. My wife has become a Linux convert (woohoo!), but unfortunately I'm having a problem getting decent performance out of her computer. She has a P-III 800, which is faster than my 450, but the harddrive performance is a bottleneck on her whole system. It's horribly slow.
The following is from the boot messages: ALI15X3: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 78 ALI15X3: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later ide0: BM-DMA at 0xffa0-0xffa7, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:pio ide1: BM-DMA at 0xffa8-0xffaf, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:pio hda: FUJITSU MPF3102AT, ATA DISK drive hdc: TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M1402, ATAPI CDROM drive ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14 ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15 hda: FUJITSU MPF3102AT, 9773MB w/512kB Cache, CHS=1245/255/63 hdc: ATAPI 40X DVD-ROM drive, 128kB Cache Her harddrive is supposedly Ultra-DMA capable, but I got a bunch of errors trying to get dma enabled with hdparm. Looks like it's still not set. poohbear:/proc/ide/ide0/hda# cat /proc/ide/ide0/hda/settings name value min max mode ---- ----- --- --- ---- bios_cyl 1245 0 65535 rw bios_head 255 0 255 rw bios_sect 63 0 63 rw breada_readahead 4 0 127 rw bswap 0 0 1 r file_readahead 124 0 2097151 rw io_32bit 0 0 3 rw keepsettings 0 0 1 rw max_kb_per_request 64 1 127 rw multcount 0 0 8 rw nice1 1 0 1 rw nowerr 0 0 1 rw pio_mode write-only 0 255 w slow 0 0 1 rw unmaskirq 0 0 1 rw using_dma 0 0 1 rw She has lots of swap space... /dev/hda5 1 63 505984+ 82 Linux swap ...and a rockin' CPU... poohbear:/proc# cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 vendor_id : GenuineIntel cpu family : 6 model : 8 model name : Pentium III (Coppermine) stepping : 3 cpu MHz : 801.822 cache size : 256 KB fdiv_bug : no hlt_bug : no sep_bug : no f00f_bug : no coma_bug : no fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 3 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 psn mmx fxsr xmm bogomips : 1599.07 Her mem stats look about the same as mine. poohbear:/proc# free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 112056 109576 2480 15980 2292 6672 -/+ buffers/cache: 100612 11444 Swap: 505976 240620 265356 But I can't get this sucker working properly. poohbear:/proc/ide/ide0/hda# cat /proc/ide/ide0/hda/model FUJITSU MPF3102AT Any help getting some decent performance out of this thing?
