It looks to me like you might have just chosen the wrong processor option - this happened to me when I forgot to set it for a K6 family chip. It hung in exactly the same place. Do you have a boot disk so you can recover? Hope so. If you can, all you should have to do is recompile for the processor you actually have in there.
