Thanks for pointing me in right direction. I uncommented "auto" in /etc/modules and rebooted. But I still got the same error. Then I saw that the top of /etc/modules suggests "no auto" if you don't want kerneld to run.
The error message indicated that I shouldn't be running it with a 2.0 or greater kernel. So I changed it to "no auto". On reboot I no longer got an error message. I'm happy about that. But now my question is what have I really done? And why, outside of following the advice of dmesg?:-) Ken "Eric G.
