I did this on my wife's machine, going from 2.2 (standard woody) to 3.1 and some packages were not updated properly - in fact I think they were removed and no replacement installed. Unfortunately I cannot recall the details - it was moderately traumatic, as I thought she'd said to go ahead and do it and she thought she hadn't....
