Rich, I am unfamiliar with applying patches, recompiling kernels or otherwise messing with the "Guts of the installation process". I have, however, been working on a debian 2.2 box for about 8 months though. If you happen to have the image of the root disk would you be able to send it to me in an email? In return I will "post images of my boot disk somewhere to save the headache of creating your own".
