alright. but i am apparently too stupid. i have /usr/lib/locale/en_US/* and locale -a lists en_US as well. furthermore, just `locale` gives LANG=en LC_CTYPE="en" LC_NUMERIC="en" LC_TIME="en" LC_COLLATE="en" LC_MONETARY="en" LC_MESSAGES="en" LC_PAPER="en" LC_NAME="en" LC_ADDRESS="en" LC_TELEPHONE="en" LC_MEASUREMENT="en" LC_IDENTIFICATION="en" LC_ALL= (note the LC_ALL, which is unset) but it's not working. as soon as i set the environment variable LC_ALL to en_US, it's fine, but that's a "temporary fix." i would like to fix my systems globally for all users. thanks. martin; (greetings from the heart of the sun.) \____ echo mailto: !#^."<*>"|tr "<*> mailto:" [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- "finally, we have a president who knows how to run the government like a business. presuming the business is pets.com." -- gail collins
