As a new Debian user and not real familiar with the intricacies of it's package system I can vouch that it worked for me. I upgraded from 2.2.17-idepci (used for a network install) to 2.2.18 (normal).
It's worked nicely so far. Even did a bunch of module configuration (use modconf) and haven't seen any complaints (from the system).
