you probably want to either stop artsd (killall -9 artsd) before you run quake, or run q3a through artsdsp. the last time i played with artsdsp it was a bit laggy, so it may not be optimal for playing q3a. you can disable artsd entirely from the kde control center (de-select "start arts soundserver on kde start" from the "sound system" module) > I can > play the first level, and then when it changes levels it freezes.
