(Follow up to my previous message) I see the following suspicious entry in the logs:
wheat modprobe: Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.2.17/modules.dep Also, there was quite a lot of disk repair when I initially restarted. The indications were everything was fixed up, however.
