Try adding something like this to your ~/.gtkrc:
style "user-font"
{
font="-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-10-*-*-*-p-*-iso8859-1"
}
widget_class "*" style "user-font"
This will set the font to 10-pixel helvetica.
Warning: I use gnome, so YMMV.
