I'm using Debian 'stable' mgetty-pvftools-1.1.27-4.1 on one machine and 'testing' mgetty-pvftools-1.1.28-2 on another. On both, when I prepare a message from a wav file it produces static like noise when my modem answers.
My modem is a Sportster Vi 33600 Faxmodem. It records incoming perfectly. I can take an incoming message and play it back as the standard.rmd and it sounds great. If I take the same message and use pvftools to make it a wav file it sounds great. If I take that wav file and transform it back into rmd, it is only noise. rmdfile on incoming messages shows US_Robotics 1, 8 bit, 8000 samples. I use wavtopvf and pvftormd US_Robotics 1 to recreate the rmd from the wav and rmdfile shows the same information. The same problem (noise) occurs if I use a wav from another source, use pvfspeed to make the speed and bits correct and pvftormd to prepare the rmd file. Is this modem a known problem? Is there a known problem with pvftormd, and can I work around it? If not, what modems currently available on the US market are known to work with Debian, vgetty & pvftools? Thanks.
