Usually you have to send the command "ppp" if ppp doesn't start automatically at the other end. Some of our systems used to require this, and those that did did not necessarily have ppp listed in the help output. You mean the other end answers, waits, and then hangs up? Yes, that would be a timer expiring. Not all systems have the sense to start ppp automatically when bombarded with LCP packets.
