cdparanoia does work. I, too, have a Creative cd reader and an
HP cd-rw, both IDE. I've been able to use cdparanoia to grab
audio from both drives with SCSI-emulation.

Try "cdparanoia -d /dev/sr0 -B" and see what happens.
