I was able to recover from a similar disaster (I messed up the shared library configuration a good one) by going back to the initial install procedure I used to put Linux on the machine. In this case I started it up from DOS using the loadlin stuff. When I got into the installation procedure, I skipped past initializing the disk partition stuff and popped open an alternate console using the control alt digit stuff. When I got there, there was a good RAM-based Unix in control and my hard disk partition was mounted on something like /install or something like that. In short, I was able to UNDO the bad things I had done to the shared library configuration using the tools on the RAM-disk based Linux that was there for the installation procedure.
