Thanks to Colin Watson and others. I think that the "automatic timeout" was a bug. Now that I have recompiled the kernel and gotten nVidia working properly on my system, the "automatic timeout has disappeared. I have no idea, of course, what the bug was, or where. But it's gone with a kernel recompile.
