Try running XF86Setup - also, even though you may have uninstalled the xbase
package, the configuration files were probably left behind.

use 'dpkg --purge package_name' to remove the configuration files as well.

Make sure you install the package xserver-svga - though it sounds like you
already did this. Then try running the XF86Setup as root, to re-set up the
XF86Config.
