that was actually the first thing i'd tried; it asks all kinds of fascinating questions that seem like they need voodoo to answer. but i did it again anyhow. and i iterated through several of the multiple-choice areas and... TA DAA! i finally had a 640x480 desktop! then i put some stuff in ~/.xinitrc (and ~/.xsession) and voila, a window here, a panel there! stabs in the dark can sometimes work wonders... ----- i continued iterating through some of the multiple-choice items given via dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and, without borking my monitor, managed to get a higher-resolution desktop...
