that was actually the first thing i'd tried; it asks all kinds
of fascinating questions that seem like they need voodoo to
answer.

but i did it again anyhow. and i iterated through several of the
multiple-choice areas and...

TA DAA!

i finally had a 640x480 desktop! then i put some stuff in
~/.xinitrc (and ~/.xsession) and voila, a window here, a panel
there! stabs in the dark can sometimes work wonders...

i continued iterating through some of the multiple-choice items
given via
        dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
and, without borking my monitor, managed to get a
higher-resolution desktop...

QUESTION: how do i find out what selections apply to my hardware
so that i can get the highest resolution possible? scan rate and
refresh seem to be the kickers.

also, even with the second-lowest resolution i can't get the
ctl-alt-[+] or ctl-alt-[-] to zoom in or out, the way it used to
under potato. what'd i miss?
