If it works in win95 and you see mouse cursor like you say, I suspect whoever configured you X picked the wrong mouse device. Check your X86config file. I belive it's in /etc/X11 . Also make sure you indeed have a serial mouse. Win95 is capable of detecting PS2, BUS and serial mice. LINUX X must be told what you have. And what device to use to access it.
