Sure.  Are you familiar with unix at all?  There's a little bit of a
learning curve (not as quick as Win95,  but much *cheaper* :)
email and internet access are GREAT under linux.
I don't do much database work,  so maybe someone else here can answer that
question.
Word processing is possible with one of a few office suites,  at least two
of which can import/export MSWord or other formats.  Also,  if you do
technical publications,  LaTeX is fully available -- as a matter of fact,
I use it as my only word processing system.

By the way,  this question probably belongs on the debian-user list rather
than on debian-devel (so I've cc'd it to -user instead).  The devel list
was intended for questions about the "work in progress",  the upcoming 2.0
release.
