There's a little bit of a learning curve (not as quick as Win95, but much *cheaper* :) email and internet access are GREAT under linux. I don't do much database work, so maybe someone else here can answer that question. Word processing is possible with one of a few office suites, at least two of which can import/export MSWord or other formats. Also, if you do technical publications, LaTeX is fully available -- as a matter of fact, I use it as my only word processing system.
By the way, this question probably belongs on the debian-user list rather than on debian-devel (so I've cc'd it to -user instead). The devel list was intended for questions about the "work in progress", the upcoming 2.0 release.
