I usually just look at the "Mounted on" column from your df output to see which filesystem a directory is on, but others around here may have a better trick. Your root fs isn't mounted read-only, is it? What does "ls -ld /etc/dnscache/log/main/" and "ls -l /etc/dnscache/log/main/current" show?
