Hi Kent.

I solved the problem but should have posted the solution to the list.
Anyway, it all automagically worked when I compiled my own kernel!!! On
my old box, I had always made my own kernel, but with the new machine I
didn't have the time. I got around to it finally, and kdm started
working (and I could also start using the binary nvidia drivers too). I
guess there was something included in the default Debian 2.6.8 kernel
which was upsetting something on my system.
