I have a xinerama setup in case that helps, but the whole thing works
absolutely fine under gdm. Can anyone help me with this?
 

My guess, and this is just a guess, is that KDM did not finish 
installing properly, or has a bug. I notice it's been a few days; if 
you're still having the problem, I'd suggest another round of:

# apt-get update
# apt-get dist-upgrade
to make sure you get all of the extra parts needed by KDM.
