startx from console. I'm not running a session manager. I get the the gray screen with the cursor in the middle then nothing. I have to CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE to get out. Funny thing is I have had it working before, but with ICE instead of TWM. I will try and install ICE again and see if that works. I will also try a 2.4.26 kernel and see what happens.
