Install the SMART tools? Assuming the drive is smart capable.
apt-cache show smartsuite
Or on sid:
apt-cache show smartmontools
Then see if that shows anything useful.
Hard drives sure don't seem to be as robust as they used to be. My
experience has been that once you get a glitch or two, the countdown
has started, and it's a short fuse before the drive becomes
completely useless. All efforts to stave off the inevitable seem to
amount to rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.
My experiences too.
For critical servers such as that I would always use disk mirroring or other raid capability.

You can also do software RAID across a network (but take care with bandwidth requirements!).
