Hard drives sure don't seem to be as robust as they used to be.  My experience 
has been that once you get a glitch or two, the countdown has started, and 
it's a short fuse before the drive becomes completely useless.  All efforts 
to stave off the inevitable seem to amount to rearranging deck chairs on the 
Titanic.
