Dear Michael, Just this past weekend I managed to install sid on a Dell Dimension 8100 desktop (about 2-3 years old now) using a net-install CD which I downloaded from the net (http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/cdimage-testing/daily/). It installed pretty easily. I do remember that there were a number of options that could be typed at the boot prompt once I booted from the CD. One of the options that may apply to you had something to do with exactly the error message you received aic7xx=off or something like that, specifically having to do with certain model Dells. Maybe if you typed this at the boot prompt you could avoid that error. You can hit F5 or F6 for the exact command once you are at the boot prompt.
Now, I just used the defaults, typed "expert26" (without the following aic7xx=off) and hit return through pretty much the whole installation--giving the defaults. I am not really an expert, but the "expert26" command at the boot allows you to specifically download the unstable flavor of Debian. The option to choose stable, unstable, testing becomes available part way through the installation. I now have a working GNU/Debian linux computer! I hope I haven't misled you and that this has helped. By the way, I would strongly recommend the net-install since the CD images of the sarge and sid would not work for me. I tried downloadind them on different machines and burning the CD images with different burners (I was sure there was something I was just not doing correctly!). I am now convinced that the problem is not at my end but with the images themselves. Anyway, best of luck! When it tries to detect the network, I get the message "Error while running modprobe -v aic7xxx I tried to continue. When it reached the network configuration, DHCP configuration failed. I did a manual setup, rechecked the parameters and tried to continue. I then got the message "An error occurred and the network configuration has been aborted. You may retry it from the installation main menu." I tried to continue. When it reached the point of detecting hardware, I again got the message "Error while running modprobe -v aic7xxx" I'm stuborn, but it was obvious at this point that Debian wasn't going to install. There isn't anything esoteric on this system - and the network card is well supported under Linux. I am going to submit an installation report, but does anyone know what might correct this?: -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFA2zKkjeziQOokQnARAhu4AJ41uTWk7yLY0W+5MbCtJlXGKTbaYwCeL8As gv9xgN1X1SjmRyKQEA8cVKI= =LkLp -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
