Before I got this e-mail from Tam, I had been investigating my system deeper and deeper. I found teh following entries in my /var/log/syslog;Jim,
Go to http://www.alsa-project.org/ and download the correct source package for your architecture and what not (most likely to be i386) and then extract the contents of the file. When that is finished change directory into the new alsa one and read the README file and other files that are in caps as they help you out.
Once it is all compiled/install type alsamixer in a terminal and a big equalising page should come up (hopefully) and then if it does, tweak the sound to your hearts consent.
HTH,
Tam.

Tam, Per your e-mail yesterday, I could not get into alsa-project's web-page. I can today. How do I download the sources and do the compile?

Apologies for the massive paset but I really would like to solve this issue. It appears to my noob eyes that the sound portion of my machine is being ignored during boot. Consequently, it doesn't matter which driver I install (OSS or Alsa) as there is no sound system for it to drive. Am I right in this and if so what can I do to correct it?
