Jim, Go to http://www.alsa-project.org/ and download the correct source package for your architecture and what not (most likely to be i386) and then extract the contents of the file. When that is finished change directory into the new alsa one and read the README file and other files that are in caps as they help you out.
Once it is all compiled/install type alsamixer in a terminal and a big equalising page should come up (hopefully) and then if it does, tweak the sound to your hearts consent. HTH, Tam.
