You could always have fetchmail dial out on demand if you don't mind
the phone bill.But if you don't have this, yes, I agree that
looking at headers might be nice. Use IMAP if you can.

use of imap will depend upon if the mail server is allowing that. most of them offer pop3 connections and just a few offer imap. correct me if i am wrong

While doing some admin box on a debian machine at work I found a
pop3browser package and the description matches what you want.

yes. thanx for pointing me to it. so, now my setup will be exim + pop3browser + fetchmail + procmail? on windows it used to be *only* outlook!!

Not really. You are assuming (1) you can determine a virus from
looking at headers

no. i am only saying that i will delete all headers if senders are not known etc. not a 100% guarantee but some safety!

and (2) your MUA is so buggy that a virus will get
to it (welcome to Linux).

not only mua - the whole system! and while i agree chances of virus are low on linux, there still remain *some* chances!
