I have a .xsession (rather than capital X, don't know if it makes a
difference) that was sourced just fine by kdm, when I used it. Go to
'session type' -> Debian (or is it xsession?) - my memory is getting
hazy, but one of those should do it for you. After that, you can choose
'last' as session type to keep those settings.
