The file /etc/debian_version contains the version number of the release you're running. 2.2 is codenamed potato, 3.0 woody. > Need to experiment with various desktops. You can then switch between them either by switching the x-window-manager and x-session-manager alternatives around (use 'update-alternatives --config x-window-manager', etc.), or with the more traditional Unix method of writing an .xsession file, which is just a shell script that launches whatever desktop environment, window manager, or other applications you want.
