I know this isn't quite what you want, but if you're looking for an MP3 player and an external hard disk, I would get an Archos Recorder 20. It plays MP3s, connects through USB 2.0, and looks like a hard drive. It also has open source firmware and can encode MP3s from a microphone, SPDIF input, or analog stereo input. Mine works flawlessly (well, USB 1.0 because I'm not running a devel kernel) under Debian.
