I can recommend the Creative Nomad IIc. At the time I bought it, it
was unbeatable price-wise, offers good sound, has very low battery
usage and is in every aspect a very cool gadget :-)

And with nomad-tool (available here:
http://www.swiss.ai.mit.edu/~cph/nomad.php) managing mp3s on it is as
easy as can be on the command-line.
